MORE ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Lindy Sowmick!

I'm Lindy Sowmick - I've worked with and supported over 100 DFL campaigns and candidates over the years, and my goal as a communicator has always been to make complex and important information accessible to the public - and through that work, make progressives, working folks and candidates successful in making good change.
I live in Red Wing with my girlfriend Maura, and I'm passionate about expanding our DFL tent to include more folks from different backgrounds, including the non-political rural folks I talk to every day. We love our rural community, and we wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
I'm a proud member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe - if you're wondering how to pronounce my last name, it's derived from "Amik," which is beaver in Ojibwe - so "Sah-mik." My family is beaver clan - my dad has always said we're community-builders. A big part of why I got into politics was watching my family members working in our Tribal and local governments to advocate for solutions that help folks.

My Story
I grew up in rural Michigan, just outside of my reservation and the college town of Mt. Pleasant. I'm an only child to my two incredible parents, who work as an events planner and a public health nurse for our tribe.
I moved to Minnesota for college, studying Political Science at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. That's when I knew Minnesota was my new home - I love our nature, our culture, our thriving rural, urban, and suburban communities and the way Minnesotans care for each other. Minnesota's like no other state - and I'm proud to call this state home.
I worked as a barista at multiple coffee shops throughout college - that's why I'm passionate about supporting service workers, and service worker unions.
My first paid job in politics was in 2016 for Congresswoman Angie Craig's first campaign, working out of the Eagan office. After graduating from the U, I joined the canvass team for the House Caucus in 2018, a huge year with so many incredible candidates who ran for the first time because of Trump's harmful agenda. I won an award for knocking the most doors across the state for the House Caucus that year. I then took on the role of Legislative Assistant in the Minnesota House of Representatives, supporting DFL House members from rural, suburban and urban districts.
I still love doorknocking and having deep, personal conversations at the doors with voters - meeting them where they're at. I think everyone should doorknock if they can - that's why I'm still out knocking and supporting candidates as a party leadership candidate, and why I would continue that work if I'm elected.
At the House, I worked my way up from Legislative Assistant, to Committee Legislative Assistant, to Communications Specialist. My favorite memories from my official-side work during this time was organizing for the House Climate Action Caucus, working with our Minnesota Values Project allies on deep-canvassing official-side doorknocks across the state, and working with Rep. Todd Lippert on Town Hall Tours that brought in constituents in every corner of his rural district. I loved serving as a Communications Specialist with a special assignment to support the House People of Color and Indigenous Caucus, and supported their work in representing diverse communities across the state, holding events and advocating for strong, community-based solutions to systemic problems. My favorite speech that I ever supported an elected official in writing was for Rep. Athena Hollins on the day the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
It was around this time that Maura and I moved in to our house in Red Wing - we wanted to find a strong, rural community that split the distance between my work at the Capitol and her work with farmers in Southern Minnesota.
I joined the House DFL Campaign team in 2022 as their Communications Director, supporting candidates across the state by sharing messaging, proofing mailers and lit, coordinating events and supporting our candidates to be the best that they can be. I'm honored to have been part of the team that helped us win a democratic trifecta - a win that would allow DFLers to go on and do amazing things for Minnesotans.
After the campaign, I joined the communications team of the largest union in our state - Education Minnesota. I supported the work of the union in bringing educators to the Capitol, helped educators raise their voice on issues important to them, and created materials and content that would make good change for educators and students. My favorite memories from my two years at Education Minnesota was supporting local bargaining units in hard fights for stronger wages (especially the Lakeville Teachers in 2024, go EML!), supporting more than a hundred college students studying to be teachers write and pass a bill while engaging at the Capitol for the very first time, planning huge rallies for fair pensions, and serving on my own staff union's negotiating team. I strongly believe that every letter of the DFL matters, and a strong partnership and support for the Labor movement is essential to us winning in the future. During this time, I also supported many candidates who were endorsed by their local educators' unions - from school board to House to Senate.
Now, I'm working as a communicator with the coalition of unions and grassroots organizations, We Make MN, that makes tax policy accessible while crafting messages against billionaires and mega-corporations. I'm also volunteering, making art, connecting with my community, writing a book and running for DFL Treasurer. I believe that my experience, background and perspective can support any leadership team DFLers choose, while setting us up to build trust with new voters from any background.
If you have any other questions about my background or the experience I'm bringing to this position - please email me! I'm happy to talk with any of you about the future of the DFL.
